For anyone who needed any more convincing that London MC Little Simz might be the best thing to happen to British hip hop this year (sorry Skepta) then her performance on Jools Holland a few weeks back offered some solid evidence. Little Simz is a conscious rapper who talks about some of the biggest issues in a balanced and, importantly, engaging way.
She’s teamed up with Grammy-nominated Californian producer DJ Dahi to create ‘N.M.B.D,’ a chilled but chopped and screwed cut that shows off how Simz might be in line to dethrone MIA as the queen of British rap. With a jazzy beat that could have been taken from Flying Lotus and some syncopated, warped vocals thrown into the mix, it’s a song that sticks with you long after the last beat is played.
