Earlier this week, New Orleans music legend Allen Toussaint tragically died at the age of 77 after suffering a heart attack on tour in Spain. Though he was perhaps best known as a behind-the-scenes character and a maker of R&B hits, he was also a prolific songwriter in his own right and worked with the likes of Elvis Costello.
The Chicago-based Whitney may be a relatively new outfit but they boast some members of Smith Westerns but they’ve already impressed with their soulful tunes. They took on one of Toussaint’s most gut-wrenching tracks – ‘Southern Nights’ – a couple of months ago, but have shared the results in light of the musician’s passing. It’s a beautiful tribute to Toussaint and a gorgeous testament to Whitney’s talent.
