It’s a Timmy Thomas-sampling, foot-stomping, dad-dancing R’n’B belter, and Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ is probably one of the most infectious track the Canadian rapper has ever released. Well, if you can ignore his meme-worthy moves in the video. They’re a bit questionable.
Fellow Canadians Glass Face have decided to take on the track themselves but since they’re a self-styled ambient alternative duo, it was always obvious that this wasn’t going to be your average cover. They’ve taken the chart-bothering hit and put a distinctly breathless and ethereal twist on it, and the results are dazzling. Drake’s tale of love, loss and mobile phones is turned into an epic tragedy by the pair, who use beautiful harmonies, sparse guitars and a truly powerful burst of glassy drums and cymbals to completely transform the track into something unrecognisable but gorgeous.
The group are releasing their debut EP You Are Nowhere next month and even if you just take this cover as an indicator, it’s set to be a thrilling collection.
