Think of a band that’s doing pretty well for themselves and also come from Spain. At this moment in time, most of you are probably thinking of Hinds, the DIY four-piece that have captured the hearts of people across the world with their often shambolic proto-punk ditties. But hot on their heels are Baywaves, who’ve been working with Joe Walker from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard on their genre-defying sound.
“Growing up in a decontextualized, internet-dominated, environment, where we could shift from one song to another without restrains or prejudices [means] our references are pretty wide,” Fran Bassi and Marco Lobera told The Line of Best Fit. That sense of decontextualisation (not a word, we know, but we’re going somewhere with this) has dripped into Baywaves’ music, creating a blend of psych, pop and DIY on ‘Marsupilami’ that’s as catchy as their better-known Madrid contemporaries. Are Baywaves the next biggest thing to come from Spain? Don’t put it past them.
