I saw Bristolians Meadowlark playing at Tramlines last year and for the longest time before they came on, I swore they were going to be a cutesy, folky duo (they have the words “meadow” and “lark” in their name). And yeah, there was a little folksiness in there but on the whole I was surprised by how poppy the duo were. Perhaps that’s to do with the fact that their last EP Dual was produced by one half of another of our favourite bands Oh Wonder, Ant West.
Upon hearing their latest single ‘Paraffin,’ it’s fair to say that Meadowlark are traversing more into that electronic groove that also characterises Oh Wonder. It’s got an emotional edge and layers that build up constantly over the course of the track, making it feel vital and vibrant in equal measure. It’s the title track from their upcoming EP, and a statement of intent from the Bristolians.
